La "Celestina" de Palacio, Juan de Lucena y los conversos

Abstract

En el presente artículo se publica por primera vez la Oración anónima que acompaña en el llamado «manuscrito de Palacio» al fragmento de la Celestina y al Diálogo de vida beata, obra, esta última, del converso Juan de Lucena. La Oración está escrita por un eclesiástico toledano converso -como lo fue, según los datos que aportamos, el propio Lucena- y podría tratarse de otra obra del mismo autor. Por lo que respecta al origen del manuscrito de Palacio, se defiende la posibilidad de que, dado que este códice perteneció al convento de Santa Cruz de Segovia, sede del Inquisidor general Torquemada, el motivo de aparecer allí pudo haber sido la polémica que mantuvo Lucena con el canónigo toledano Alfonso Ortiz, a causa de la oposición de aquel a las primeras condenas impuestas por la Inquisición a los conversos, lo cual le costó ser condenado él mismo por un tribunal eclesiástico. Se plantea, por último, la hipótesis de trabajo de que Juan de Lucena pudiera estar relacionado también con la autoría de la Celestina primitiva, anterior a la refundición de Rojas. El manuscrito de Palacio podría contener obras pertenecientes, o atríbuidas, a Lucena, copiadas por quien fuere. Por otra parte, son abundantes los indicios que conducen a buscar la génesis de la Celestina en el entorno toledano al que perteneció Lucena en algún momento de su vida, y al que pertenecen también Rodrigo de Cota y el propio Rojas, los conversos toledanos mencionados en los paratextos de la Comedia y de la Tragicomedia.

Being published for the first time, it can be found in this article the anonymous "Oración" which in the so-called "anuscript of Palace" accompanies both, the excerpt from "Celestina" and the "Dialogo de vida beata", this last work being written by the converted Juan de Lucena. The "Oración" is written by an ecclesiastic convert from Toledo, as was Lucena himself according to the information provided in this article. Thus it could be another work by the same author. With respect to the origen of the "Manuscript of Palace" we support the possibility that, given that this Codex belongued to the Saint Cross Monastery in Segovia, seat of the General Inquisitor Torquemada, the reason for appearing there could be a result of the controversy existing between Lucena and Toledan Canon Alfonso Ortiz. This controversy arose due to the opposition on the part of Lucena to the first condemmnations of the Inquisition upon the converts, which caused Lucena to be condemned himself by a ecclesiastic court. We also discuss the hypothesis that Juan of Lucena could be related to the authorship of a early "Celestina" written before Rojas's work. The "Manuscript of Palace" may contain works written supposedly by Lucena but copied by another person. There are many indications which drive us to look for the genesis of "Celestina" in the Toledan setting which Lucena belonged to at some moment of this life; the same Toledan setting to which Rodrigo de Cota and Rojas himself, the Toledan converts mentioned in the paratext of the "Comedia" and the "Tragicomedia", also belonged.
