Abstract

La autora pasa revista a sus investigaciones sociolingüísticas de los últimos 25 años en el ámbito de la migración entre España y Alemania: la emigración de mano de obra española no cualificada y de sus familias en los años sesenta, el retorno de un gran número de esos primeros emigrantes y de sus familias a España unos 20 o 30 años más tarde, y la emigración actual de jóvenes altamente cualificados hacia los países de habla alemana. Los estudios realizados indican que el tipo de identidad etnolingüística juega un papel fundamental tanto en la adquisición como en el mantenimiento de las lenguas. En el caso de los emigrantes españoles actuales, el tipo de motivación para aprender la lengua y el grado de autoeficacia cobran una importancia adicional.

Language as the key to success in (r)emigration. The author offers an overview of her sociolinguistic research activity undertaken during the last 25 years among Spanish (r)emigrants: Spanish unskilled workers and their families who emigrated to Germany in the sixties, second generation emigrants who returned to Spain about 20 or 30 years later, and the current highly skilled young Spanish emigrants who try to find a job in one of the German-speaking countries. The studies indicate that the type of ethnolinguistic identity plays a key role in both, the acquisition and the maintenance of languages. In the case of today’s Spanish emigrants, the type of motivation to learn the language and the degree of self-efficacy play an additional important role.
