Abstract

Among the multiple popular images boosted and distributed by Hollywood, whose original sense and meaning was almost always distorted, we find that of the latin lover. Within a context of sad triviality, still marked by the millions of deaths during the Great War, the American cinema industry – fundamentally driven by economic interests – decided to foster the sensual snubbing of the last years of the Belle Époque by focussing on Argentinean tango and the image of those who performed it at its best. Rudolph Valentino was their first main trump in this particular venture, followed by Carlos Gardel. Both of them made the transition from silent cinema to talkies fit in with the sickly sweet rhythm of the River Plate. These figures brought about a series of various phenomena on the collective imaginary depending on the sex of the recipient subjects. Some of the most popular included feminine hysteria and the smart and affected cultural construction of «rich kids».
