Abstract
sanitaria reciba el reconocimiento y la importancia que se merece The successive humanitarian crises that we have witnessed in recent years have caused a series
of migratory movements with consequences for all countries. One of these consequences is the
culture and linguistic shock that occurs between these people who have had to emigrate and the
receiving countries. The role of public service interpreters is to help these people in vulnerable
situations by enabling communication between them and the public institutions. The shock that
occurs in healthcare is perhaps the one that may have the most serious consequences in the lives
of these people, hence the importance of providing healthcare interpreting professionals.
However, in Spain this profession does not receive the importance it deserves, both in terms of
professional and educational recognition. It is only thanks to the efforts made by associations,
groups, and NGOs that some kind of progress has been made in this field at the training level.
Over the last 15 years, specific courses and seminars have been held covering various areas of
healthcare interpreting, subjects have been included in translation at interpreting degrees at
universities, and even it has been created a postgraduate training specialised on translation and
interpreting in public services. The aim of all these actions taken over the years is to promote
specialised and professional training in this field so that healthcare interpreting receives the
recognition and importance it deserves
