Abstract
Due to the continuous arrival of foreigners from other countries to Spain and the
current pandemic situation caused by SARS-CoV-2, the demand for public services such
as those related to mental health, has increased. Because of this situation, new challenges
for mental health professionals have emerged. Communication between specialists and
patients is essential in mental health settings, since the principal tools that the therapist
has to work with are language, emotions, and cultural references. Therefore, professional
interpreters are vital in the communication process in the mental health settings.
The main purpose of the current research is to find out the amount of information
that Spanish mental health specialists/therapists have on the regulations they should
follow when working with professional interpreters. The first objective of this research is
achieved by carrying out a survey with Spanish therapists and, the second one, through
research, and comparison of the obtained information with that of the countries with more
extensive background in this field. The current investigation is a quantitative and
qualitative study, and its aim is to gather information about Spanish mental health
professionals and their ability to work with immigrants.
The hypotheses put forward in this paper are the following: (1) Mental health
interpreting in Spain is in a clearly pre-professional phase. (2) Compared to other fields,
it is less common to work with professional interpreters in mental health settings. (3) In
6
mental health settings patients are accustomed to working with ad hoc interpreters. (4) In
this setting patients are not aware of or reject professional interpreters because they are
concerned about their privacy. However, both verbal and nonverbal communication are
essential for establishing the correct diagnosis of the patient and this is where the need
for professional interpreters arise. Thus, this paper is structured into sections that
demonstrates and confirms the hypotheses stated above and these are based on the
obtained information from mental health guidelines and relevant articles. Finally, the
obtained research results depict the veracity of the hypotheses of this project
