La necesidad de interpretes y traductores sanitarios en Canarias; Tenerife como punto de partida

Abstract

La situación geográfica, política y económica basada en el turismo del archipiélago canario hacen que sea un lugar de intercambio poblacional constate, siendo la tercera región de nuestro país que recibe más turistas anualmente. Esto, unido a la población extranjera residente, convierte a nuestro Sistema Canario de Salud en uno de los pilares fundamentales de estos grupos de individuos, los que potencialmente harán uso de él. El objetivo principal de nuestra investigación es analizar la situación actual de los servicios de traducción e interpretación sanitaria en la isla de Tenerife tanto a nivel de atención primaria como hospitalario, la demanda existente y realizar propuestas de mejora/ayuda a tener en cuenta por las instituciones. Esta investigación es un estudio que pretende confirmar una demanda real y justificar el deber de implantación de un servicio de traducción e interpretación sanitaria conformado por profesionales. La hipótesis que planteamos es que los centros de atención primaria y hospitalaria públicos del Servicio Canario de Salud en la isla de Tenerife no cuentan con ningún servicio de traducción e interpretación a pesar de la demanda existente lo que da lugar a problemas propios de las barreras de comunicativas y culturales entre paciente y profesional sanitario durante la atención médica. Esto, junto al no conocimiento de la profesión de intérprete sanitario por los profesionales sanitarios y la poca información por parte de la institución, conlleva a una desinformación acerca de la posibilidad del uso de este servicio resultando en una atención poco satisfactoria sin entender el mensaje por ambas partes en un ámbito tan importante y delicado como el sanitario. Para confirmar estas primeras impresiones trataremos los siguientes puntos: i) un marco teórico se analiza la población extranjera residente y los turistas junto a su nacionalidad que visitan las islas. ii) elaboración de encuestas al personal sanitario en relación a los servicios de interpretación sanitaria y análisis de sus respuestas. iii) procederemos a elaborar conclusiones y medidas a considerar por el Servicio Canario de Salud para ofrecer este servicio. Por último, los resultados confirman nuestra hipótesis de que no existe ningún servicio de interpretación sanitaria en la isla de Tenerife por parte esta institución y una pobre información acerca del protocolo a seguir en las situaciones de barreras lingüísticas entre el paciente y el personal sanitario.

The geographical, political and economic situation of the Canary Islands based on tourism transform it in a place of constant population exchange, being the third region of our country that receives more tourists annually. This fact, along with the resident foreign population, establish our Servicio Canario de Salud ‘Canarian Health Care System Service’ as one of the fundamental pillars of these groups of individuals, who will potentially need it. The main objective of our research is to analyse the current situation of health translation and interpretation services in the island of Tenerife, both at the primary care and hospital, as well as the current need of them to provide ideas for improvement/help to be taken into account by the institution. This research aims to confirm a current demand and justify the implementing of health translation and interpreting services composed of professional healthcare interpreters. Our proposed hypothesis embrace that the primary care and hospital public centres of the Servicio Canario de Salud on the island of Tenerife do not offer any translation and interpreting service despite the current demand, which leads to communication problems and cultural barriers between patients and healthcare professionals during medical attention. The lack of knowledge of the health care interpreter profession by the health care professionals together with the no existence of information on the part of the institution, leads to misinformation regarding the possibility of using this interpreting service causing unsatisfactory medical attention with the not understanding between both parties in such an important and delicate field as health care. In order to confirm these first impressions, we develop the following points: i) Analysis of a theoretical framework focused on the resident foreign population and tourists who visit the islands together their nationality. ii) Carried out of surveys in relation to health interpretation services to health professionals and analysis of their responses. iii) Conclusions and measures development to be considered by the Servicio Canario de Salud to offer this service. Finally, the results confirm our hypothesis of the no existence of any health interpretation service provided by this institution on the island of Tenerife as well as the lack of information regarding the protocol to be followed when language barriers situations between patients and health professionals occurs.
