Abstract
As it was stated in the Prologue the main purpose of this book is to offer an overview of the new Spanish multicultural society and the challenges this
represent for the administration and the various institutions in charge of meeting their
needs in the area of public services. This paper will examine the reality in the central area of Spain, which comprises three Comunidades Autónomas (Autonomous Communities): Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (CAM), Junta de Comunidades de CastillaLa Mancha (JCCM) y Aragón. Each of them has a different rate of immigrant
population, and consequently different needs and different solutions. In many cases, these are also accompanied by the demand for translation and interpreting services. In
line with this new reality, the article examines the current situation in relation to translation and interpreting in heath, legal and educational settings.
