Actividad económica e industria automotriz: la experiencia mexicana en el TLCAN

Abstract

El rubro automotriz ha sido considerado, desde las negociaciones del Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN), como el sector más prometedor de la manufactura mexicana, y si bien tuvo un desempeño decepcionante una vez pasados los primeros años del Tratado, desde la crisis global se ha recuperado, convirtiéndose en el séptimo productor mundial. En 2015, tanto la producción como las ventas de vehículos ligeros para el mercado interno y externo, han alcanzado cifras sin precedentes, con incrementos anuales respectivos de 5.6%, 19.0% y 4.4%. Este trabajo profundiza en el papel de las exportaciones automotrices en el crecimiento económico de México desde la firma del TLCAN. Se analiza la dinámica de la manufactura automotriz y la naturaleza y sostenibilidad futura de su reciente recuperación, incluyendo el impacto de distintos eventos que se han dado de manera simultánea y que han determinado su desempeño en este periodo, tanto en la producción para exportación como para el mercado interno. También se profundiza en su efecto de arrastre en la economía local, para establecer si esta industria constituye un motor de crecimiento económico de largo plazo para el país

The automotive industry has been considered the most promising sector in the automotive industry after the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations were established. Despite the disappointing performance after the first years of the treaty, the industry recovered significantly since global crisis, positioning Mexico as the seventh largest producer in the world. In 2015, both the production and sales of light vehicles for domestic and foreign markets have reached record levels, with respective to the 5.6%, 19.0% and 4.4% annual increases. This paper explores the role of automotive exports in economic growth in Mexico since NAFTA. The dynamics of the automotive manufacturing and the nature and future sustainability of the recent recovery is discussed, including the impact of various events that occurred simultaneously and which have determined its performance during this period, both in regards to production for export as well as for the domestic market. The research also evaluates its dragging effect on the local economy in order to determine whether or not the automotive industry could be considered as an engine of economic growth for the country
