Tradición y parodia en el Millonario de San Ciprián, primer recetario impreso para buscar tesoros en Galicia (Las hondas raíces del Ciprianillo: 1ª Parte

Abstract

En este artículo es descrito el Millonario de San Ciprian editado por “Adolfo Ojarak”, un folleto barato y burlesco, impreso en A Coruña a mediados del siglo XIX, que ofrece una lista de supuestos escondrijos de tesoros romanos y moros enterrados en los alrededores de la ciudad, con sus correspondentes exorcismos para desencantarlos. Aunque se trata de una broma, debida quizás a algún impresor coruñés, refleja cómo era la tradición de los Ciprianillos de su época y las creencias populares vivas en el imaginario popular de su tiempo.

This article describes the spurious “Millonario de San Ciprian” (the “Gazetteer of Saint Cyprian”) edited by a certain “Adolfo Ojarak”. The Millonario is a cheap and burlesque booklet, printed in the mid 19th century in Galicia (north-western Spain), which pretends to be an authentic list of hidden treasures, buried many centuries ago by the Romans and the “Moors” in the neighborhood of the city of Coruña, with the necessary magic formulas to exorcise them of their protective spells. Although it is obviously a professional joke of a local printer, the booklet does give some interesting clues as to the popular beliefs concerning hidden treasures, and the wider treasure-hunting traditions of that particular time and place
