Abstract

Syllable-final /s/ weakening among Salvadoran transmigrantes in South Texas. In the following study, we explore the weakening of syllable-final /s/ in the speech of Salvadoran transmigrantes or transitory migrants in Brownsville, Texas. Transmigrante is understood here as someone traveling through a region (e.g. Brownsville) en route to a fi nal destination (such as the interior of the United States). Previous studies suggest that Salvadorans in contact with Mexicans in the United States modify their speech patterns to appear more like them linguistically (cf. Hernández 2009, 2002; Aaron y Hernández 2007). The proposal is that contact brings about an increase in the level of linguistic insecurity in the Salvadoran communities, which in turn promotes unfavorable attitudes toward their own variety. Thus, we analyze the degree to which the crossing through Mexico heightens the linguistic attitudes of the transmigrantes entering the United States and the point to which the crossing permeates their linguistic patterns. The former is measured qualitatively and the latter quantitatively through the comparison of relative frequencies in syllable-final /s/ weakening. The variable analysis showed a stratifi cation of the weakening patterns. The Salvadoran transmigrantes produced smaller frequencies of weakening than their fellow citizens in El Salvador; however, the same transmigrantes produced greater frequencies of weakening than other Salvadoran immigrants in Houston.
