AB This  article  develops  a  transatlantic  approach  to  the  colonial  and  postcolonial  uses  of  the term  "sertão"  (backlands)  in  Angola,  Brazil,  and  Mozambique  through  analyzing  the  works  of  Mia Couto and Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, especially in their readings of João Guimarães Rosa. By focusing on their fictional and essayistic work, I analyze how these authors explore social and environmental dimensions  of  different  sertões  in  order  to  negotiate  the  multiplicity  of  meanings  the  term  has acquired on both continents.
