Importación y acuñación de moneda circulante en La Española durante el siglo XVI

Abstract

Aportación a través de numerosa documentación del proceso que La Española tuvo a lo largo del siglo XVI en cuanto a circulación de moneda. De los intentos por conseguir una ceca propia a las numerosas fluctuaciones que afectaron a su circulante, Santo Domingo padeció tanto la política restrictiva a la Instauración de cecas como repetidas crisis comerciales derivadas de las carestías y devaluaciones de su siempre pobre moneda.

The role and contribution of the Española concerning currency is documented through the extensive XVIth century writings. Beginning with the attempts of creating its own minting mills, it describes the series of fluctuations that affected currency of Santo Domingo. It cues on the faith of this country which suffered from restrictive monetary policies. Further on, it describes the foundation of mints and dwells upon the incessant commercial crises derived from shortages and devaluations of its ever weak currency.
