Abstract
This research work is mainly based on three aspects: historical analysis, theoretical analysis and practical analysis, called case study.
The first aspect dealt with consists of understanding the historical framework and urban development of Villa de Vallecas, from its origins to the present day. Thus, it is analyzed how it was annexed to the city of Madrid, as well as its own growth as a district around an axis that vertebrates the neighbourhood until its encounter with the recent extension (PAU).
Secondly, the theoretical study is based on the reading and abstraction of authors such as Jane Jacobs, Jan Gehl or Izaskun Chinchilla, to understand the concept of public space, its use and its relationship with architecture and citizens, as well as the repercussions and criticism of the architecture and urban planning of the Modern movement, from which the cities of the 21st century derive.
In the third and last place, the case study proposes a field research, through the analysis of the district of Villa de Vallecas and its relationship with the rest of the city of Madrid, by carrying out tours within the district and describing the user’s experience.
Thanks to this study, the elements that make up a quality public space where users feel comfortable and safe are determined.
