Abstract
A change in the Egyptian artistic style, with more natural physical represen tations that exaggerated the forms of the female body —especially in the case of the king— occurred by the reign of king Akhenaten. The two theories suggested to explain the meaning of these representations are, on the one hand, that this style was purely symbolic and, on the other, that it reproduced the actual appearance of a man affected by physiological disorders. In this article, we aim at rejecting the hypothesis of the diseases attributed to the king, offering alternative arguments that support the symbolic function behind of the androgynous iconography for pharaoh Akhenaten. Hence, this resource should be understood as the
ultimate attempt by the crown to recover the lost prestige of the monarchy and return to the times when the god-kings really dominated the country.
