The use of plastic mulch films has been a great advance in agricultural production. However, the conventional plastics used in this practice cause numerous negative impacts on the environment: the generation of microplastics that due to their recalcitrance cannot be eliminated correctly by soil organisms, the release of toxic additives for the microfauna, impacts on the edaphic structure and soil functioning. For this reason, the use of biodegradable plastics is an alternative that not only does not negatively affect the efficiency of agricultural mulching, but also does not generate impacts on the environment due to the absence of plastic waste after the growing season, because they completely disappear to be mineralized into CO2, water and biomass. Within biodegradable films we can distinguish between those that contain ester bonds in their structure, susceptible to the action of esterase enzymes secreted by microorganisms (polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polybutylene succinate, polycaprolactone and adipic acid), and those which contain in their structure molecular polysaccharides (cellulose and starch) with faster degradation. Biodegradable plastic mulches (BDMs) can be prepared from fossil-sourced materials or renewable sources, these last ones being those that generate the lowest environmental impact. There is another type of films called oxo-biodegradable, which have a greater impact than BDMs because they are conventional films with additives that accelerate their degradation. The development of biodegradable films has increased in recent years, with the appearance of numerous manufacturers of these materials that offer quality and guarantee of sustainability.
