La importancia de la cultura y la influencia de esta en el ámbito de la interpretación de los servicios públicos

Abstract

Vivimos en una sociedad multilingüe en la que cada vez es más importante superar las barreras comunicativas, y culturales que se pueden presentar en cualquier momento del día, para ello tenemos a figuras como los intérpretes y/o mediadores que tiene que poseer una serie de subcompetencias (lingüística, quinésica, proxémica, paralingüística, pragmática y estilística) para poder alcanzar la eficacia comunicativa deseada en cualquier acto comunicativo y, concretamente en el ámbito que atañe a nuestro trabajo que sería el de los servicios públicos. Dichas competencias ayudan a los intérpretes a saber cómo actuar en cada momento y a no caer en los estereotipos, los cuales generan prejuicios, u otros errores, que pueden afectar a la calidad de su trabajo y, por lo tanto, influir directamente en si se alcanza la eficacia comunicativa o no. Por otro lado, el lenguaje corporal y la comunicación no verbal son aspectos que merecen especial atención en la realización de una interpretación dada la cantidad de información que llegan a transmitir y lo determinantes que pueden llegar a ser para que la situación comunicativa sea exitosa. Este estudio ha servido, además de para profundizar en aspectos importantes que atañen tanto a las interpretaciones como a los intérpretes, para confirmar la hipótesis planteada relativa a la importancia del conocimiento cultural por parte de los intérpretes a la hora de realizar su trabajo y a la eficacia en la comunicación dentro del propio acto comunicativo. Además, este estudio también ha ayudado a constatar que a los intérpretes les queda todavía un largo camino por recorrer para poder llegar a conseguir que se recurra a nosotros como a cualquier otro profesional cuando sea necesario, pero con dedicación y esfuerzo podremos conseguir que el panorama de la interpretación alcance los méritos que se merece y la misma importancia que tienen otros sectores

We live in a multilingual society where every day it is increasingly important to overcome communicative and cultural boundaries which can occur at any time during the day. To overcome these boundaries, we may employ the assistance of different professionals such as interpreters and/or mediators. These professionals should possess a series of sub- competences (such as linguistic, kinesics, proxemic, paralinguistic, pragmatic, and stylistic) to achieve the desired communicative effectiveness in any communicative act, specifically in the field that concerns us, which would be that of public services. The sub-competences mentioned above help interpreters to know how they should act and react at any given moment and how to avoid the use of stereotypes, which may result in prejudices or other mistakes which may also affect the communicative effectiveness of the message being delivered. Likewise, body language and non-verbal communication deserve special attention in the interpretation. This is due to the amount of information that they can provide, and how important and decisive they are for a successful communication in the interaction. This study has been useful not only to examine in depth the importance of these aspects concerning both interpretation and the role of the interpreter, but also to confirm the suggested hypothesis regarding the importance of cultural knowledge on the part of the interpreter. This is important for the interpreter when carrying out their work and evaluating the effectiveness of the communication within the communicative act. Furthermore, this study has also helped to highlight the fact that interpreters have still a long way to go in reaching a variety of audiences, but with dedication and effort the interpreter may be able to increase the visibility

and relevance of communicating through an effective interpreter and to help interpreting achieve the esteem it deserves.
