Salvadores lingüísticos: intérpretes voluntarios en los hospitales de la Costa del Sol

Abstract

Hoy en día, en España, vivimos en una sociedad globalizada y multicultural donde coexisten diferentes culturas y nacionalidades y cuyos habitantes hablan diferentes lenguas. Por esta razón, han surgido las necesidades comunicativas entre sus habitantes. La primera barrera a la que se enfrenta el inmigrante o el turista que llega a nuestro país es la lingüística, sobre todo, en los servicios públicos; por ejemplo, cuando tienen que asistir a una consulta médica, a la comisaría, etc. y no disponen de un profesional de la interpretación en dichas situaciones, así que tienen que recurrir a otras terceras personas que pueden ser un familiar, amigo, conocido, etc. para que puedan hacer de puente durante el acto comunicativo. Entre esas personas que ejercen la labor de la interpretación no profesional se encuentran los intérpretes voluntarios. Este trabajo de fin de máster se centra en el papel del intérprete voluntario en el contexto sanitario en los hospitales de la Costa del Sol, zona que alberga a una gran cantidad de inmigrantes sociales y económicos, además de tratarse de un destino muy solicitado por parte de los turistas extranjeros, sobre todo, europeos. El objetivo principal es conocer el papel o papeles correspondientes de las tres asociaciones de intérpretes voluntarios que ejercen su labor en tres hospitales y un centro de salud localizados en la Costa del Sol. Este trabajo se puede dividir en dos grandes bloques: un marco teórico, en el que se presenta el estado de la cuestión de la interpretación en los servicios públicos y, en concreto, la interpretación sanitaria en España; además de una breve descripción del perfil del intérprete voluntario. El segundo bloque se corresponde con el marco práctico del trabajo, en el que se expone, a través de una serie de encuestas, la opinión de los intérpretes voluntarios, pero también se tiene en cuenta la del personal sanitario, que se corresponde a una de las partes implicadas en el contexto comunicativo durante la interpretación. Tras la revisión y el análisis de los resultados obtenidos, se tratará de determinar cuál es el papel que asume el intérprete voluntario en este ámbito y hasta qué punto se cree que se satisfacen las necesidades comunicativas entre el personal sanitario y los usuarios extranjeros.

Today, in Spain, we live in a globalized and multicultural society where different cultures and nationalities coexist and whose inhabitants speak different languages. For this reason, communication needs have emerged among its inhabitants. The first barrier faced by immigrants or tourists arriving in our country is the linguistic barrier, especially in public services, for example, when they have to attend a medical consultation, the police station, etc. and they do not have a professional interpreter in such situations, so they have to turn to other third parties who may be a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, etc. so that they can serve as a bridge during the communicative act. Volunteer interpreters are among those who work in non-professional interpreting. This final project focuses on the role of the volunteer interpreter in the healthcare context in the hospitals of Costa del Sol, an area that host a large number of social and economic immigrants, as well as being a highly desirable destination for foreign tourists, especially Europeans. The main objective is to know the role(s) of the three associations of volunteer interpreters in three hospitals and a health centre located on Costa del Sol. This research work can be divided into two main sections: a theoretical framework, which presents the status of the interpretation issue in public services and, specifically, healthcare interpretation in Spain; as well as a brief description of the profile of the volunteer interpreter. The second part corresponds to the practical framework of the work, in which the opinion of the volunteer interpreters is presented through a series of surveys, but also that of the medical staff, which corresponds to one of the parties involved in the communicative context during the interpretation. After reviewing and analyzing the results obtained, an attempt will be made to determine the role assumed by the volunteer interpreter in this field and the extent to which it is believed that communication needs between medical staff and foreign users are being met.
