Manifestación física de una ideología: definición del espacio urbano y arquitectónico de los “caracoles zapatistas”, lugares destinados a la construcción y ejercicio del autogobierno indígena

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es develar el espacio arquitectónico y urbano de los Caracoles Zapatistas, entendidos como espacios destinados a la construcción y ejercicio de la autonomía, siendo estos la manifestación física de una ideología y organización política que se traduce en la autonomía perseguida por los pueblos originarios en Chiapas. La ideología que fundamenta este fenómeno y su manifestación tangible y física es clave en su funcionamiento, ejecución y vigencia. Sin embargo, el papel de los factores que lo hacen posible ha pasado desapercibido y considerado de menor relevancia frente al contenido político e ideológico. Al tratarse de un fenómeno con repercusión en la constitución y ejercicio de la autonomía de un pueblo, el papel de la manifestación física del entorno plasma y sirve de agente de caracterización en la identidad de los habitantes y su cultura en relación con la ideología que sustenta su forma de habitar. La búsqueda de información y documentación referente al urbanismo y arquitectura de los Caracoles develó la carencia de estudios e investigación desde este enfoque al fenómeno. Por ello, documentarlo resultaba de vital importancia. El trabajo de campo realizado en agosto de 2020, así como las entrevistas y documentación aportada por asesores y aliados del movimiento desde sus origines, fueron un factor de vital importancia para lograr los objetivos de este trabajo. La relación entre ideología y organización del movimiento zapatista en la definición del espacio físico de los Caracoles es indiscutible, prueba de ello es la reproducción del modelo después de 16 años. El agente que sirve de traductor entre ideología y lenguaje compositivo del espacio es el arte. Las expresiones creativas y de identidad que en la arquitectura se plasman, son las que dan sentido y arraigo por parte de los habitantes al lugar entendido como un espacio destinado a la construcción y ejercicio del autogobierno indígena.

The objective of this work is to unveil the architectural and urban space of the Caracoles Zapatistas, understood as spaces intended for the construction and exercise of autonomy, these being the physical manifestation of an ideology and political organization that translates into the autonomy pursued by the indige-nous communities in Chiapas. The ideology underlying this phenomenon and its tangible and physical mani-festation is key to its operation, execution, and validity. However, the role of the factors that make it possible has gone unnoticed and considered of less relevance compared to the political and ideological content. As it is a phenomenon with repercussions on the constitution and exercise of the autonomy of a town, the role of the physical manifestation of the environment re-flects and serves as an agent of characterization in the identity of the inhabitants and their culture with the ideology that sustains their way of living. The search for information and documentation regarding urban planning and architecture in the Caracoles revealed the lack of studies and research from this approach to the phenomenon. For this reason, documenting it was of vital impor-tance. The fieldwork carried out in August 2020, as well as the interviews and documen-tation provided by advisers and allies of the movement from its origins, were a factor of vital importance to achieving the objectives of this work. The relationship between ideology and organization of the Zapatista movement in the definition of the physical space of the Caracoles is indisputable, proof of this is the reproduction of the model after 16 years. The agent that serves as a translator between ideology and the compositional language of space is art. The creative expressions and identity that are embodied in architecture are those that give meaning and roots of the inhabitants to the place understood as a space destined for the construction and exercise of indigenous self-government.
