Abstract
acorde y estructura, y acorde y armonía. Traditional definitions of chord, such as “three or more notes sounding
simultaneously” are epistemologically deficient because there is both sound aggregates
that break the conditions set by these definitions and are perceived as chords, and
aggregates that fulfill them and are not perceived as such. In this paper this problem is
made evident and a definition is proposed based on the qualities of the chord considered
essential by the author, namely: tonicity, complexity and unity. After discussing the basic aspects of the ontological nature of the chord and of each of its essential auditory qualities,
are examined some issues that have been raised concerning the relationship between chord and
duration, chord and structure, and chord and harmony.
