Movimiento de pasajeros a través del Atlántico. Los extranjeros que desembarcaron en el puerto de Veracruz, México, 1825-1848

Abstract

El presente trabajo se enfoca en el análisis estadístico de las corrientes migratorias extranjeras que entraron por el puerto de Veracruz entre 1825-1848. Dicho nodo portuario fue durante la centuria decimonónica el principal punto de entrada (y salida) de personas que se dirigieron a territorio mexicano. Con base en el análisis de las listas de pasajeros y la hemerografía, presento el ritmo de ingreso y se ofrece un perfil del foráneo, en el que se toma en cuenta el nombre, la nacionalidad, el sexo, la edad, el estado civil, la profesión, el centro de destino, el motivo de llegada y las recomendaciones. Recurrí a métodos seriales y cuantitativos para mostrar un panorama general del conjunto de la población migrante que llegó a la rada veracruzana. Este estudio incursiona en el movimiento migratorio internacional por el Atlántico durante el siglo XIX, es decir, estudia el proceso que inicia con la salida del migrante de su terreño, la navegación transoceánica y la llegada al espacio receptor.

The present work focuses on the statistical analysis of foreign migratory flows that entered through the port of Veracruz between 1825-1848. This port node was during the nineteenth century the main point of entry (and exit) of people who went to Mexican territory. Based on the analysis of the passenger lists and the newspaper, I present the rhythm of income and a profile of the foreigner is offered, which takes into account the name, nationality, sex, age, marital status, the profession, the destination center, the reason for arrival and the recommendations. I used serial and quantitative methods to show a general overview of the migrant population that arrived in Veracruz. This study ventures into the international migratory movement across the Atlantic during the 19th century, that is, it studies the process that begins with the departure of the migrant from his homeland, the transoceanic navigation and the arrival to the receiving space.
