Pragmatic competence in L2 Spanish: a case of Russian-speaking
immigrants in full immersion. In this paper we focus on the problem
of acquisition of pragmatic competence in L2 Spanish. We take as
reference four native speakers of Russian in full immersion and study
the pragmatic component of their communicative competence in
Spanish language. The main aim of this research is to offer an analysis
based on recorded conversations and dealing with how speakers
with advanced competence in Spanish prove their command of
pragmatic tools in L2. Since more than one type of pragmatic failures
are observed in the target speakers’ discourse in L2 Spanish, this
work looks for offering their ontological interpretation in order to
contribute to the fi eld of Didactics of Spanish as a Foreign Language.

Identity and Prestige in the linguistic attitudes of the Ecuadorian
population in Madrid. Over the last 15 years, the wave of migratory
movements toward Spain has become a complex situation in which
relationships between groups have consequentially provoked
contacts between different languages and varieties of Spanish.
The language, as an element of supreme importance in forming an
individual’s identity, plays a fundamental role in these relationships.
In the case of the Spanish-speaking immigrants in monolingual
communities, the dialectal convergence and divergence are phenomena that will be employed as strategies for the bringing nearer
or distancing of the social identities of the groups with whom live
together in a community. The linguistic attitudes are a refl ection of
the social attitudes towards its own group as well as the community
which receives them, and because of this, it will be necessary to know
the attitudes in order to understand the sociolinguistic process of
integration for these immigrants. The causes that will generate those
attitudes, and that which will be the base for the communicative
accommodation, will depend on the factors of prestige, power
and solidarity. The objective of this work is to study the linguistic
attitudes of the resident Ecuadorian population in the city of Madrid
with respect toward its own variety and toward the variety within
Madrid, applying the stimulus tape, to analyze in what way the
sociolinguistic integration is occurring in the Ecuadorian community
of Madrid.

Citizenship as an instrument of inclusion and exclusion – A comparative analysis of language requirements in naturalization processes in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand

Citizenship is an extremely complex concept and, as such, can be
utilized in sociolinguistic research in order to account for differences
in language policies. Language requirements in naturalization
processes point to differences in particular countries’ language
policies. Specifi cally, analysis of such language requirements reveals
the different facets of the countries’ language policies in terms of
the ways in which applicants for citizenship via naturalization are
expected to know and use the countries’ offi cial language(s) or the
main language (in cases where there is no offi cial language). The
paper aims to address changes in such language requirements in
four immigration countries which are bound by a specifi c past
associated with colonialism and the fact that English is the medium
of communication for the majority of the population. The countries
are: the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. A
comparison of past and current language requirements provides an
insight into both past and current status of immigrants and their
languages in the four countries. This, in turn, leads to assessments
of citizenship increasingly being regarded more as an instrument of
inclusion rather than as an instrument of exclusion.

Aunque pertenecen a
tercer espacio.
Finding a language of one’s own in the Third Space: literature of the
Spanish migration to Germany. Migration as a central experience of
modernity has changed the concepts of homeland and identity. It has
likewise changed literature and introduced the idea of the intercultural
author, or literature from the Third Space. This article describes
the infl uence of the Spanish migration to Germany during the sixties
and seventies on the writing of Víctor Canicio and José F. A. Oliver.
Although the two authors belong to different generations and address
distinct audiences – Canicio mainly in Castellano and Oliver
in German with features of Castellano and Alemannic – both started
writing as a result of the migratory experience. The literary careers
of both evolved from seeking identity and a sense of home through
writing, towards a relocation of the migrant subject between the
homeland and the “other”. This relocation results in a refl ection on language and its limits and possibilities, embodying a transformation
into a literature written from the Third Space.
