This paper, which describes the research project which led to the construction of a test to certify linguistic communicative performance of immigrant workers in the Comunidad de Madrid, focuses on the treatment given to sociocultural variables related to three main areas: cultural references, routine and conventional uses of language and non verbal ritualised behaviours. The test is based on CEFR linguistic, psycholinguistic and socialinguistic principles and specifications, and on a language model which is taught, learnt and evaluated under a pragmatic, functional and communicative perspective.
The paper explains the social, institutional and theoretical framework of the project as well as the different phases followed. The starting point was an ethnographic study of the target group’s communicative needs and the domains and communicative situations in which they need to operate. This led to the selection of the taskbased approach as the most appropriate for the test, the definition of the desired format, the selection of suitable oral and written genres to be represented, the design of the tasks to be included and the specification of evaluation scales for each competence. The process was completed with the validation and implementation of the test.

Moroccans and Poles in Madrid: linguistic attitudes. This paper examines
the linguistic attitudes of two of the most important immigrant groups
in our country: Moroccans and Poles. By semi-structures interviwes,
and considering two important variables, sex and time of permanence in
Spain, we highlighted the peculiar linguistic attitudes of both immigrant
groups that, even if they share some charachteristics, they differs from
the origin of languages, semitic and slaves, and from cultural habits.

Vamos a analizar,
Analysis of the transmission of Euskera in the Basque Autonomous Community.
The Spanish Constitution of 1978 recognizes the legitimacy of
regional languages, so in the autonomous community of Basque
Country (ACBC) two official languages coexist since 1978: spanish and
euskera, the language of the region. Furthermore, since a 1982 law, the
euskera muste also be used in non-university education. We will analyze,
using data from census data and Statistics of population and housing
carried out between each census, the evolution of the knowledge of euskera
in the ACBC since 1986. Given the weakness of the total fertility
rate in the ACBC, we could expect a decrease of use of euskera as the
population "home" decreases over time. But we will demonstrate that in
fact, the practice of euskera has grown because it is an assimilation of the
basque language by immigrant populations, and that language always
attracts the same extent in the younger generations.

Lexical availability of immigrants. A proposal for a need. The continuing
increase of immigration in Spain is a challenge for those specialists
involved in language teaching. The article carries a warning about the
need to conduct research with a subject of explicit study the immigrant
and a concrete proposal on the methodology of ‘Lexical availability’.
Exemplification through the study of lexical availability, carried out in
various schools of 'Spanish for immigrants' in the city of Valladolid,
shows the possibilities and difficulties of this particular methodology in
this group of adult informants. What is more, it points its main contributions
to the research and teaching.
