involucrados: a mayor mantenimiento, mayor o mejor integración.
This paper focuses on the importance of linguistic
and cultural maintenance in the integration process of the immigrant
communities. For this purpose, this qualitative investigation analyzes
three interviews conducted with three women immigrants that live
in Vigo, in order to shed light on their sociolinguistic profi les. By
these means, the hypothesis that there is a positive causal correlation
between the two phenomena involved may be verified: the highest
the maintenance, the highest or the better the integration. The results
show a common tendency towards maintenance led by the immigrant
communities. However, linguistic and cultural maintenance seems to
be rejected by the recipient society. Therefore, the conclusion points
to the necessity of finding some balance between both perspectives in
such a way that the process of integration is facilitated and reinforced.

aumento cuya tendencia no parece cambiar a corto plazo. No cabe
A continuación,
In the last years, far from witnessing
a decrease in immigrant scholars within our borders, according
to official information, an increase has been produced that it does
not seem likely to change in the near future. There is no doubt that
institutions from different scopes (European, Spanish or regional, for
example) have put every effort into activating measures to integrate
non Spanish-speaking immigrants via the teaching of Spanish in
scholastic centres. However, in light of the PISA (Programme for
International Student Assessment) tests, this does not seem to be
enough. In the following paper, a critical analysis of the Language
Immersion Programme designed by the Department of Education of
the Government of Navarre (Spain) is presented. For this purpose, it
was crucial to study the demographic situation of the non Spanishspeaking
residents in Spain and in Navarre specifi cally. In addition,
it was necessary to revise the current legislation with regard to
Education and Immigration so as to propose an improvement of the
Programme.

In 1995, Sonja Hilzinger drew up a comparison
between the people who fled into exile during the national/socialist
period and the people who are currently recognized as migrants
today. She studied principally the living conditions of both groups
while affirming that her goal was not to compare them but instead
her objective was to highlight the differences between them and
underline the common points with a view to avoiding making the
same errors that had been committed in the past (Hilizinger. 1995:
68, 70). In a similar manner, Henning Müller holds the same opinion:
“that it is possible to draw a relationship between the experiences of
people in the past and the voices of today” (Müller. 1994: 12). Starting
from this approach we will attempt to take a deeper look at the
concept of the “exiled person” and the “literature of exiled people”.
Our objective is to explore both the points of similarity as well as
the divergences between what was once known as migration and the
then called literature of migration or the literature of exiled people,
its most recent physiognomy, and the way in which this evolution
has been produced.

This paper contributes to that discussion by examining a community
of Lebanese immigrants in Dearborn, Michigan. Factors such as
cultural identity, age, and time within Michigan are considered in
whether the Dearborn Lebanese are holding to their own dialect
or acquiring that of the surrounding area, that being the Northern
Cities Shift (NCS). Analysis of the acoustics of subjects’ speech,
their understanding of NCS sounds, and demographic data of the
community will paint a picture of their current dialect and the effects
of NCS upon it.
