Introducción al paisaje lingüístico de Madrid

Madrid
This is the first
study to apply to Madrid the sociolinguistic theoretical framework
known as the "linguistic landscape" (LL), the capital of Spain, originally
developed by Landry and Bourhis (1997). LL is defined as the
written presence of different languages in public spaces, which is
indexical of the ethnolinguistic vitality of the different linguistic communities
in a given territory. This approach is of great interest to the
analysis of Madrid due to the recent multilingualism that has appeared
the city since the 1990s as a by-product of immigration. Against
this backdrop, Castilian Spanish has, for the first time, come into
simultaneous contact with several other languages and varieties of
Spanish such as those of the Americas. This new situation can be seen
in the LL of Madrid as documented in the series of photographs
selected by the authors based on their representativeness of the public
space of Madrid.

material audiovisual. Asimismo, se avanzan los resultados más destacados
de la fase de validación.
The examination leading to the award of the
DILE certificate (Spanish Language Certificate for Beginners) is part
of the Implementation project of a training and language certificate
programme for immigrant workers of Madrid. This project is dependent
on the Regional Immigration and Cooperation Office of the
Autonomous Region of Madrid and the Antonio de Nebrija Foundation.
The validation phase is almost completed, so that the examination
can be offered in the coming months. It focuses on the communicative
skill, and is made up of four tests corresponding to speaking,
audiovisual comprehension, reading and writing skills. As an
example, in this paper we have included the audiovisual comprehension
test to show the criteria used to write the test and to prepare the
audiovisual material. The main results of the validation phase are also
included.

This paper aims to analyse the current situation of contact between Spanish and Italian,
due to the remarkable presence of Spanish speaking immigrants in Italy. In the first part, an overview of Latino immigration in Italy is
presented, taking into account, among other factors, the numeric
consistency of the group and the presence of second generation
immigrants. Secondly, previous situations of contact between the
two languages are described, as well as phenomena of hybridization
concerning closely related languages. In the last two parts, the situation
of Spanish as an immigrant language in Italy is explored, and a
corpus of interviws to Spanish-speaking immigrants is analysed. The
study stresses on various aspects, such as linguistic uses and the role
of language in the construction of new transcultural identities, at the
different stages of immigration process and integration.

This paper offers the first research analysis of
the INMIGRA corpus (http://www.grupoinmigra-imasd.es). This corpus
is formed by journalistic texts from general-interest, reference, non
free Spanish newspapers (Abc and El País), general-interest free newspapers
(20 minutos and ADN), and newspapers specifically oriented to
immigrant population (Latino and Sí, se puede). The texts were compiled
in the first fortnight of both October and November 2008. Our aim
is to deal with the linguistic treatment given to different issues related to
Latin American immigration, as well as with the images of immigration
transferred by the above mentioned newspapers. Specifically, we have
started studying the key issues considered in the different information
pieces, with the double purpose of analyzing the references made of the
subjects and actors of the information, and also the framing types provided
by these media about the reality of immigration.

Within the frame of University of Genoa
research project dealing with "Immigrant Languages" in the local
scholar context, the research group has detected new linguistic and
educational needs, resulting from the school insertion of Latin American
students. After a brief introduction, the article describes the
development of teaching strategies to address the needs of such students,
which are different from those of native-Italian speaking students
studying Spanish as a foreign language. These strategies, successfully applied in the USA (Spanish for Native Speakers) have been
adapted according to the nature of the two languages in contact. The
second part of the article presents some preliminary results of a study
carried out in a High School, based on the framework of the autobiographical
method, which takes into consideration not only the migration
process, but also the pre-migratory phase, and stress the importance
of some social factors, such migrants' beliefs about themselves
and the attitude of the receiving society, two aspects strongly related
to the social adaptation process as well as learning improvements in
general.

Language and immigration in the educational and social context
Otero, Jaime

Estados Unidos
migratorios.
In
the context of International migrations, the knowledge of the language
is one of the barriers that the newcomer and his descendants have
to face to gain a full integration in the host society. In Spain, where
immigration is relatively recent, the political and academic attention
to migration is still focused on the management of flows rather than
integration. Regarding the ~ ~ ~ t uasrpaeclt of integration, it would be
easy to suppose that Latin-American immigrants are better placed
than immigrants from other origins to gain a faster and fuller integration,
given the cultural proximity and the sharing of the same language.
This would be a major difference to what has happened in the
USA with the Latino or Hispanic communities. Nevertheless, a comparison
with other countries suggests that, even if sharing the language
is a considerable advantage, this is not the only or even the main
aspect that future policies of integration will have to tackle.

0475).
Main efforts on
integration, from the perspective of language, concentrate on language
teaching despite the fact that Translation and Interpreting are key
elements for integration. This task is generally performed by volunteers
at inmigrants' associations, always with scarce resources. Yet, in
the Information Society, when access to information on the Internet
is a reality for most citizens, the development of electronic resources
for mediators is a must. The present paper analyses the role of Translation
Technology in this context with a practica1 example, INMIGRA-
TERM, a glossary on inmigration developed under the network
INMIGRA2007-CM (S2007/HUM-0475).
