This article presents a brief overview of the Vietnam war experience in Chicano literature
and later turns to the analysis of the story "Somewhere Outside Duc Pho" written by Daniel
Cano. The story was later modified, including the title, and inserted as a chapter in his novel Shifting Loyalties. The original story and the second version have important
parallelisms; however, there are significant variations which are analysed in this article. The difference stems in the change of narrative strategy given the genre: short story or
chapter of a novel. Among these differences are the characterization of the protagonist, the
narrator, the use of an external receptor, direct or indirect style stemming from the relationship between the time of events and the time of the telling, and finally the use of a
different tone and attitude in the discourse ofthe characters.

Spanish society has begun a process of change that started in the USA a long time ago. In both countries-as happened in Canada, Australia and European countries such as
England, France or Holland-one of the major reasons for this change is the arrival of people from other places with different languages, cultures, religions and ideas. The main
aim of the present study is to investigate the attitudes and opinions among the current population and those that are arriving in both the USA and Spain. To carry out such a study, first, I will bring to debate sorne terminological questions related to the concepts of "multiculturalism," "cultural diversity," and "interculturality" through the presentation of
the more commonly accepted models "of integration." Secondly, I will introduce the topic
of the social debate on migration in the media as an introduction to the empiric study that will follow. Thirdly, I will present the results of the opinion survey carried out in both
countries among people of different geographical and cultural origin during 2001 and 2002. Finally, and considering the results of the survey, I will conclude with the similarities and
differences between the North American and Spanish realities in relation to the debate about the current population and those that are arriving and their influence on the development of the social, political, and cultural life of each country.

"Boston: America's Walking City" is the focus theme of the article which deals both with the way Boston is shown by its well-known, Freedom and Black Heritage Trails -where a part of its colonial, Revolutionary and Black Heritage history is shown to visitors- and the way Boston could be understood by walking its streets. The article stresses not only how the transient character of a city is built upon such walking activity, performed by residents and
visitors alike, but also how walks and strolls are a way of understanding, belonging and making current cities such as Boston.

1946: World War II recently finished and the Cold War just beginning, the Fulbright Program was set in motion becoming the widest and most ambitious project of cultural, educational and scientific exchange of the United States. In 1958, being the North
American Government distancing against the General Franco's political regime already overcome, the agreements for the Fulbright's Program implementation in Spain were
entered into. This article focuses on those Americans who arrived in Spain through the
Fulbright's Commission between 1959 and 1975. lt analyses the singular contribution of
this group of grant holders in a double sense of cultural imports and exports. On the one
hand, it emphasizes their participation in teaching and their effort to academically
institutionalize the English language and the Anglo-American studies. The task of
exporting their language and culture. On the other hand, it emphasizes the task of importing
reinforcement and revitalizing of the Hispanicism into the United States of the 60's and the

This article presents an overview of the development of immigration research in the United States and its current situation. From a sociological perspective, various schools are
chronologically analyzed. Starting with the assimilation paradigm, the Parsonian school and
the Chicago school, the author explores the transition period (1960-1980) as well as new
approaches to immigration studies. The main objective of this article is to provide a framework
for the comparative study of intemational immigration to the United States and to Spain.

This paper explores how Spain has been lately and suddenly transformed into an immigrant society, and how Spaniards are using traditional symbolic models to think about and behave towards "others." Two models have been identified: a 'gypsy model' to deal with immigrants from poor countries, and a 'tourist model' as a way to interact with immigrants from Western richer societies. The final part of the article will give some suggestions to build a fairer and more satisfactory relationship with immigrants, one able to overcome a black-and-white picture.

This article reviews the construction of migration policies in Spain while analyzing its role as an instrument in the production of exclusion and precariousness. The changes in migration legislation-far from decreasing the number of undocumented
migrants-have produced labor segmentation and social stratification. The official determination of presenting illegal immigrants as part of a vicious circIe and legal ones as
part of a virtuous circIe opens the door to the criminalization of migration movements. This situation produces a radicalization in the vulnerability of certain labor forces. As opposed to
the culturalist perspective, which explains inequality as the result of pre-existent cultural differences, the following analysis suggests that the discriminatory and marginalized situations suffered by part of non-communitarian immigrant population in Spain are systematically produced and reinforced by various political and legal practices.

The present study aims to survey the evolution of the European immigration policy. This article analyzes the development of the immigration common policy from 1975 to the present. The European proposals and measures adopted to face the challenges of the immigration phenomena are tackled too. A compilation of the European rules referring the inflow of nationals coming from third non-communitarian countries is one of the subjects
that are deeply referred in the article. Finally, some thoughts on the perspectives of the immigration common policy are presented and organized in four policy's guidelines.

This contribution delves into one of the most striking phenomena observed in the Basque Country in the last few years: the treatment given to immigration by the Basque
Administration. Basing on a close stud y of news and editorials recently appeared in the local press, we come to the conclusion that most of the initiatives put forth by the Autonomous Government regarding this subject are the result of a direct reaction to opposite attitudes shown and legislation passed by the Spanish Government. In spite of the
progressive and ground-breaking measures taken by Basque officials, one has the impression that they do not respond to an analysis of the real needs of the migrant
contingen t but rather to an intention to mark "the difference" with respect to the central Government's policy.

Migration processes have always left marks in peoples, traditions and cultures, with the consequent manifestations in oral and written literatures. Heroes, for instance, can be defined as emigrants who are forced to solve a series of difficulties to reach their final goal. This article uses a comparative literary approach to analyze the function of the search for a paradise-where scarcity and limitations would not exist-and the encounter with "the other" as key elements on literature about migration processes. These two elements can be located at
the base of literature and migration both in the past and in the present.
