This article attempts to confront the epic lament that appears in the Bizantine Digenis Akritis to the traditional scheme followed by this type
of laments. The Bizantine fragment, which shows the grief for a beautiful
lady's death, follows the traditional epic lament pattern but, however, it also
includes some peculiarities that make the text be exceptional among the rest
of epic laments.

This article offers a complete survey of the texts and documents related to Carolingian epics in Spain during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, showing their importance for the history of Spanish epics.
Beginning with an exploration of the presence of the prestigious memory of Charlemagne, it tries to reconstruct the context of the oldest allusions to the Roland legend, as the so-called «Nota ernilianense» (c. 1070-1080). This paper gives a new treatment of the false documents related to Bernardo of Ribagorza (end of the eleventh century), who is linked in one of them to Charlemagne's family, and discusses its connection with the legend latter
located in Carpio, in the Leonese kingdom. Finally, the article presents a new
document by Pelagius of Oviedo (bishop between 1102 and 1143) which
reveals the wide circulation of the Carolingian epic tradition in Spain. The
analysis of this material brings together the known texts on Charlemagne
in the Iberian Peninsula in the twelfth century, focusing especially on the
Historia Silense and the Pseudo-Turpin, which share sorne features with the
new text that helps to explain it and uncover its meaning. The conclusions
try to show the position of the allusions by Pelagius of Oviedo within the
context of Spanish epics, and its importance for the study of other traditions,
particularly the one known as Entrée d'Espagne.

The aim of this article is to provide a more thorough study on "the war mili": a motif which literary criticism has paid little attention too This topic can be searched for in different literary traditions, which vary from
Medieval Irish epic, Hispanic baIlad collections, epic poems to Medieval
Arabic poetry or Icelandic Sagas. The different origins of this topic prove to
what extent it has become widespread, helping us to understand how different
literary genres bring about changes and influence each other over time.

A battle is a key matter both in French and Castilian medieval
epic. One of the main parts of its description is the collision charge, also
known as spear attack. The purpose of this study will focus on showing the
narration of this offensive manoeuvre in both epic literatures, analyzing the
different descriptive procedures and the structural and formulaic parallels that
appear in the French and Castilian texts. Moreover, this research will attempt
to weigh up the infiuence that the chansons de geste could have had on the
passages that belong to the Castilian epic songs analysed in this article.

The legend of the founding of Castile by Count Fernan Gonzalez
is a variant of the folkloric motif of the gift that is given by a crafty character
to another naive character, who must be compensated afterwards with another
gift of much greater value. The motif involves other many folk and literary tales, from different times and traditions. We compare the Castilian story with
tales from the Hebrew Bible and Sephardic, Persians, ndowe texts, and also
tales from the Fang of Equatorial Guinea, together with international stories
such as ATU 821B, ATU 425, ATU 500, among others.

Here is revisited Dumézil's theory about the battle fury linked
to the legends of the Irish hero Cú Chulainn and one of the Horatii roman
triplets. According to him, both legends show rites of passage, as it is proved
by the comparison with the one performed in the sacred cannibal dance of
the Canadian Kwakiutl Tribe. After a detailed review of the evidence, it is
concluded that Cú Chulainn shows, in fact, three kinds of fury, one related
to the initation trance, and two others as varieties of true battle fury. Only the first one can be twined with the Kwakiutl rite, while the young Horatius' story
has no relation with this phenomenon and must be explained as a legal and
etiologic legend.
