In their works, OrtizCofer and Santiago come to terms with the experience of migration and with theimplications this experience has on their relationship to family, culture, and theperpetuation of traditions in and outside of their homespace. The value of generationalstorytelling, heritage, history, cultural identity, bilingualism, and the development of afeminist consciousness are further scrutinized by each writer as they both question andembrace their bilingual/bicultural realities as a new form of being, rooted in theirintrinsic connection to the island and their determination to insert their lived experienceinto the American literary tradition.
