Spanish spokenin New Mexico has been characterized as old, archaic, and as an isolated Spanish dialect. However, this article shows that the archaic flavor of the New Mexican Spanish languagemight be attributed to an unconscious construction of social identity developed by theHispanic population in the area as a result of a deep and extensive language contactsituation that has profoundly impacted people’s lives throughout the years since theregion was annexed to the United States. This paper analyzes almost 900 articles from a variety of textual genres such as news, editorials, essays, advertisements, and letters to the editor in order to evaluate the use ofSpanish as a public language and its relationship with English in the context of socialand political changes that have occurred in the area.
