AB The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the fact that, very frequently, the so-called grolesque ("comic") tales of Edgar A. Poe have been neglected, even forgotten and only the arabesque ("serious") have been raised to the category of "works of art". It is our aim to point out the outstanding place that the former have within the total short stories of the author, leading to a much more complete understanding of the meaning of his narrative in the North American Literature of the first half of the Nineteenth Century.
