The initial constituents of NAFTA, México, United States and Canadá, could soon be joined, in a series of succesive additions, by other nations of the continent, converting to reality one of the most ambitious proposals of economic integration put forth by the United StatesAdministration. Yet NAFTA is no more than a second phase in the liberalization ofcommerce initiated on the continent by Canadá and the US in 1989 with the FTA.This treaty and its effects since its establishment show the advantages of such anopening to the competitive world trade, even in the case of a strongly subsidizedeconomy with major restrictions in the domestic market.
