AB Communication with foreign population in prisons is often carried out withprison companions who speak both the foreign language(s) in question and the nationallanguage(s). Accordi ng to data avai lable in Spai n, these ad hoc i nterpreters and translatorslack the necessary training to carry out this task effectively. In arder to make progress in thissituation and provide guidelines for effective communication in situations where languagebarriers hinder action, the following hypothesis is taken as a starting point: training bil ingualinmates can be a val id strategy to help resolve these difficulties and in turn contribute tofulfilling this function of reintegration into the penitentiary system. The aim of this article isto present the qualitative results of a pilot project aimed at bilingual prisoners in arder toimprove their skills and strengthen mutual trust.
