Cornelius Scipio’s relationships, if any, with the autochthonous settlement later named Italica, a link only documented by Appian’s account. I defend in this paper: a) that we can at most accept its primary and only nature of temporary lodging for wounded soldiers of Scipio’s army, b) that there are no grounds for supporting the hypothesis of the existence of a Roman foundation in Italica, and c) that the name Italica was likely imposed to the autochthonous town by the Italic people settled long afterward, rather than by Scipio.
