Learners in this kind of approachshow a different attitude as well as different needstowards the foreign language. The present articlesuggests that these changed needs and attitudescan be met by shifting the focus of foreign language teaching to literacy development. A modelof how language teaching with a focus on literacydevelopment could be organised is provided, andan example of a literacy unit is given. The model isboth wide enough to allow for teachers to adapt itto their teaching style and understanding of what isimportant in language teaching, and clear enoughto illustrate what is meant by a focus on literacydevelopment in the context of foreign languageteaching.
