AB Physical inactivity has become the fourth cause of death in the world due to the extendedsedentary habits. This critical review will focus on physical inactivity as a morbility and mortalityrisk factor by assessing its effects on the five major non-communicable diseases (coronary heartdiseases, stroke, type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer) and by analysing its economicconsequences, to conclude calling for physical activity promotion from a multi-sectorial andmultidisciplinary perspective and suggesting a promising strategy to reduce physical inactivitybased on breaking up prolonged sitting time.
