In this study, the language attitudes aboutthe perceived Spanish dialects in Mexico are analyzed using a maptask.A group of Mexican immigrants in the U.S. was asked to drawon a map of Mexico where they felt that people speak Spanish differently. They were then asked to explain/elaborate on the divisionsthat they drew. These maps and interviews were used to determinethe perceived major dialects of Mexican Spanish according to themajority of participants. Perceptions of dialects are measured viareoccurring themes that were brought up by a majority of interviewees.Salient themes include language contact, such as influenceof English or indigenous languages, and whether a dialect was deemedurban or rural.
