AB InAddioallanatura(2010),aprovocativeessaythathasenflamedalivelydebateinItaly,semiologistGianfrancoMarronearguesthattakingleavefromNatureistheonlyeffectivewaytosavetheenvironment,ourhumanlives,andourfuture.Bycontrast,inDavidVann’sSukkwanIsland,thetwomaleprotagonists(adepressedabsentfatherandhisimmatureson)chooseAlaska’swildernessastheiridealplaceforpersonalescapes,mentalregenerations,andnewbeginnings.WhatIintendtodemonstrateinthisessayishowbotharguments-­‐aworldwithoutNatureandaNaturewithouthumanbeings-­‐areinevitablydoomedtofail.WhatIpropose,instead,isanideaofContaminAction,i.e.agradualawarenessofcomplexissues,whichneedtobefacedfromamultiplicityofperspectivesandsolvedthroughtheactiveparticipationofboththehumanandnon-­‐humanagentsofoursocieties.Eventually,theanalysisofVann’snovellaperfectlyillustrateshowliterarytextscanaffectbehavioralmodelsandlifestyles.Bytouchinguponthelevelofthehumanconscienceandindividualresponsibility,infact,thisliteraryworknotonlyreflectscogentecocriticalissuesbutalsotheirpracticalfalloutsontherealitylyingbeyondthepage.Finally,theinterconnectionsofnatureandmadnessdemonstratehowtheredemptivepowerofbothnatureandfictioncannottranscendpasterrors,familialdysfunctions,self-­‐obsessions,andahauntingsenseofdoom.
