Abstract
The manuscript BNF fr. 17177 contains the first translation in
French prose of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae,
interpolated in the Histoire Ancienne jusqu'à César. After a number of
general considerations about this translation, the article focuses its attention
on the Prophecy of Merlin and on the chapters devoted to King Arthur.
The article provides the full text of the Prophecy of Merlin and discusses
the glosses introduced in it by the translator and proceeds with a
close textual analysis of Wace's Roman de Brut's influence on the Arthurian
section of the Historia Regum Britanniae.
