Los comentaristas de Ovidio en la "General Estoria II", caps. 74-115

Abstract

Las glosas alegóricas de Arnulfo de Orléans y Juan de Garlandia son la base de los capítulos de tipo hermenéutico de la General Estoria II, en los que Alfonso X desarrolla su explicación de los mitos ovidianos que reproduce en su versión de las Metamorfosis. Tras repasar los datos principales que se conocen sobre los dos comentaristas latinomedievales y recordar brevemente la importancia de la técnica de la interpretación alegórica en la aceptación de las obras literarias de la Antigüedad pagana por la cultura cristiana de la Edad Media, nos detenemos en el análisis de los capítulos de la GEII que interpretan alegóricamente aquellos otros que trasladan el contenido del Libro IV de las Metamorfosis, viendo cómo, en qué lugares y en qué orden se integran las exégesis de Arnulfo y Juan de Garlandia en la obra alfonsí. Finalmente se analizan con más detenimiento las glosas relativas a las transformaciones de Píramo y Tisbe, de Hermafrodito, de Ino y Afamante y de las dueñas de Ino. Mediante la confrontación del texto alfonsí con sus modelos es posible llegar a un mejor conocimiento de la función que tienen los relatos tomados de las Metamorfosis en esta obra historiográfica, la forma en que el equipo alfonsí se enfrenta a sus fuentes y la manera en que las utiliza, el modo y el orden en que se produce la incorporación de los capítulos de tipo exegético, los motivos que subyacen a la elección de una u otra fuente, la procedencia del conocimiento del equipo alfonsí de las Allegoriae y los Integumenta, la repercusión de la incorporación de este tipo de capítulos exegéticos al lado del material ovidiano y otras cuestiones relacionadas con la originalidad temática y formal de la General Estoria.

The allegorical glosses of Arnulf of Orleans and Johannes of Garland constitute the basis of the hermeneutical chapters of the General Estoria II, in which Alfonso X developes his explanation/ of the Ovidian myths that he reproduces in his versión of the Metamorphoseon. After reviewing the most important facts known about Latino-Medieval commentarists, and briefly recalling the importance of the technique of allegorical interpretation to the acceptance by medieval Christian culture of the literary works of pagan Antiquity, we focus on the chapters of the GEII that allegorically interpret those chapters that transfer content from Book IV of the Metamorphosis, demonstrating how, in what places, and in what order the exegeses of Arnulf de Orléans and John of Garland are integrated into the Alfonsine work. Finally, the glosses relating to the transformation of Pyramus and Thisbe, Hermaphrodite, and of Ino, Athamante, and Ino's duennas are analyzed in greater detail. By comparing Alfonso's text with its models, it is possible to arrive at a greater understanding of the tales taken from the Metamorphosis in the historiographic work, the way in which Alfonso's team of scribes confronts their sources and the manner in which they use thern, the ways and order in which they are incorporated into the exegetic chapters, the motives underlying the selection of some sources over others, the origin of the Alfonsine team's familiarity with the Aliegoriae and the Integumento, the repercussions of the incorporation of this type of exegetic chapter side by side with the Ovidian material, and other matters related to the formal and thematic originality of the General Estoria.
