Abstract

Graffiti is a recent manifestation of the unlimited human desire to communicate to others. Due to its novelty and ambiguity, it has traditionally been interpreted from its negative and illicit dimensions. However, graffiti embodies positive aspects and more complex Information which deserve a more farreaching analysis. This paper considers that the graffiti drawn by the members of the Chicano community in Austin, Texas (United States), is a source of ethnographic, anthropologic and social data, whose valué is comparable to a literary or artistic work. The goal of this paper is to suggest that graffiti is highly communicative and effícient and that the nature of its language provide further insight and understanding of its creators
