Abstract
Many historic buildings still lack of an updated accurate surveying, and the available ones are full of uncertainties and even contradict the information from the written sources. This fact hinders their comprehensive understanding and interpretation, because some interesting issues as the original uses cannot be rebuilt. On the other hand, architectural surveys are mainly used to define forms and spaces, paying little attention to the functional aspects. Our research on the Apothecary of the Monastery of El Escorial shows the utility of an accurate survey when compared to other sources, and the objective focuses on an essential vitrubian attribute as the utilitas.
