Abstract
The process of teaching and learning to read and write is a fundamental aspect of human life from an early age. There are many aspects that encompass the teaching of literacy as we know it today. However, in order to get to the present day, it is necessary to know its history. For this reason, the present work tries to show how the teaching of reading and writing has changed in our country by means of an analysis of how the teaching of reading and writing was in our country during the last century, as well as the different education laws that have been implemented up to the present day. At the same time, some of the didactic materials that have been used throughout the history of education and the development of the different methods of teaching reading and writing are also shown. The first is a theoretical part, a bibliographical and documentary review, for which an exhaustive search for information was carried out using books, magazines and other documents and a review of the laws of education. The second practical part presents a study focused on the analysis of interviews with older people about their time at school, as well as their process of learning to read and write.
