Abstract
In Spain, toponymic prerogatives are largely delegated to regional authorities. If a locality wants to change its name, it must request permission from the regional government. In order to have changes made official, local authorities must follow several steps and adequately argue the need for the change, for which they can request a report from different consultative institutions in matters of toponymy such as the Royal Geographical Society of Spain (RGSS). The complexity of Spanish toponymy, including place names that can be traced back to antiquity, or a multilingual scenario and a complicated regulatory framework, leads to frequent toponymic conflicts between different social groups and governments. This chapter addresses the protocols involved in the standardisation and rubber-stamping of geographical names in Spain, the factors that may affect them, and the work carried out by the RGSS as one of the toponymic advisory bodies of reference. A number of examples are presented to illustrate the complexity of the Spanish toponymic system and strategies adopted to mitigate conflict.
