Abstract
In August 1936, hardly a month after the military uprising which initiated the Spanish Civil War, a group of members of the so called "Generación del 27", with the support of the "Alianza de Intelecturales Españoles para la Defensa de la Cultura" launched the first issue of a weekly paper, which was to be named "El mono azul" after the colour of the uniform worn by the Spanish militia. Among others, the editorial article was signed by poets M. Teresa León, Rafael Alberti, José Bergamín and Rafael Dieste. From the very first issue, the publication set itself up to become the" spokesorgan" for the militia and a moral pillar for the republican side. However, El mono azul also became a crucible which gathered up antifascist European voices of the end of the 1930s. Specifically in 1937, "El mono azul" dedicated three issues to German language writers, who were, in one way or the other, witnesses to the war. The objective of this article is to reflect upon the images created by these authors and, most importantly, upon the positioning of the narrative voices present in these texts.
