Abstract
internacionales consume recursos médicos y personales, muchas veces escasos e
irrecuperables.
The military profession is closely related to sports practice, being a fundamental part of
both physical and psychological preparation. So much so that, in the international
missions carried out by our Armed Forces, we find “non-combat” causes as the main
reason for strategic evacuation, specifically those caused by sports injuries.
For this reason we have carried out a retrospective study in which we analyze the
evacuations for sporting causes of the Spanish contingent deployed on international
missions. Of a total of 272 casualties received in the Orthopedic Surgery and
Traumatology service of the Defense central hospital “Gómez Ulla”, 83 corresponded to
sports injuries. We have observed that soccer was the most damaging type of sport (n =
14; 17%) followed by basketball (n = 10; 12%). The highest number of casualties were
received from Lebanon (n = 23; 28%), followed by Afghanistan (n = 14; 17%). 75% of
the evacuated subjects belonged to the Army (n = 62).
The 83 patients in our series presented a total of 100 injuries whose main trauma
diagnosis, 38%, were fractures (n = 38), and the anatomical area with the highest number
of events was the lower limbs, specifically the ankle (n = 20; 31%). Regarding the
treatment received, the conservative one stood out with respect to the surgical one, since
only 8 surgeries (10%) were performed in the Operating Area and 29 interventions (35%)
in Role 4.
The high incidence of sports injuries in the development of international missions
consumes medical and personal resources, often scarce and irretrievable. It would be
convenient to analyze the harmful causes in more detail in order to implement preventive
measures outside the national territory.
