Abstract
«Confluvium» consists of the comprehensive regeneration of the historic ceramics factory of the Roca company, located in Alcalá de Henares. Like other municipalities in the so-called «Corredor del Henares,» Alcalá experienced rapid growth in the second half of the 20th century, a result of the «desarrollismo» phenomenon. This led to the formation of an extensive industrial strip that stretches between the railway tracks and the old national
highway II, dividing the city in two.
Confluvium will unite these parts by creating a large experimental green corridor interweaving the green areas that already have a natural predisposition to connect the North-South of the municipality but are segmented by the mentioned infrastructures. Thus, blending with the adjacent O’Donnell Park, the proposal will beat like the heart of this corridor, generating
a new axis for the city.
The project encompasses a comprehensive program aimed at revitalizing the area and attracting both the local community and visitors. This includes the construction of a new central train station, along with a transport interchange, while promoting the use of more sustainable public transportation and dignifying the entrance to the World Heritage city.
Furthermore, municipal facilities have been incorporated, such as a library, a gymnasium, and a parking lot with a capacity for over 600 vehicles. University facilities have also been planned, including a central cafeteria for students and a residence with a capacity for up to 250 residents, as well as dining and leisure establishments and public gardens that connect the entire corridor.
The deindustrialization process provides the opportunity to reuse industrial structures of great architectural and technical-construction value and adapt them to the needs of a 21st-century city. «Confluvium» stands out for its profound respect for the municipality’s latent history, and its goal is not only to revalue it but also to preserve it with dedication. This will allow the
rich, extensive, and fascinating history of Alcalá de Henares to continue to thrive in the present and the future.
