Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Our objective is to analyze the impact that the SARS-CoV-2
pandemic has had on the care of people with HIV at the Ramón y Cajal University
Hospital, comparing different variables distinguishing a pre-pandemic, a pandemic and a
post-pandemic stage.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from the 3265 registered HIV patients were
evaluated. The analyzed variables were consultations for the control of HIV infection in
the Infectious Diseases service, consultations in other hospital services, new patients in
follow-up, the supply of antiretroviral drugs by the Pharmacy service, total viral loads
and the percentage of undetectable with respect to totals, hospitalizations and deaths.
RESULTS: In HIV consultations, a statistically significant decrease was detected when
comparing the pre-pandemic and pandemic period (p=0.05), while in consultations of
other services no statistically significant differences were detected between the three
periods (p=0.227). Of the new HIV patients seen, there are statistically significant
differences between the pre-pandemic and pandemic period (p=0.034), and between prepandemic
and post-pandemic (p=0.004). In the drugs supplied, there were no statistically
significant differences between the periods (p=0.525), as well as in the total number of
total loads (p=0.142) and undetectable (p=0.188), and in hospitalizations (p=0.685). In
the exitus, differences were detected between the pre-pandemic and the pandemic stage
(p=0.023), and between the pre-pandemic and the post-pandemic stage (p=0.08).
CONCLUSION: Thanks to the different measures taken by the Ramón y Cajal
University Hospital, HIV-infected patients were not too affected by the SARS-CoV-2
pandemic.
