Abstract
Telemedicine can be defined as using telecommunications to exchange health
information and provide health care services irrespective of geographic, temporary, social
and cultural impediments.
Since its discovery in 1996, the telemedicine service from the Central Hospital of
Defence “Gómez Ulla” represents the main supporting source when referring to the
assistance provided to military personnel deploying on operations. In recent years, the
number of teleconsultations had sharply grown, resulting the Orthopedic Surgery and
Traumatology Service became the largest group of consultations.
According to the sample chosen for this research, it have been selected 330
teleconsultations received at the Hospital of Central Defense “Gómez Ulla” during 2017.
79 of the consultations were all geared towards the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service, becoming the most requested service. The main origin of those teleconsultations is from the military hospital in Nouakchott, Mauritania, closely followed by “Gran Capitán” base in Besmayah (Iraq). Besides adding a considerably amount of
teleconsultations coming from the seagoing ships of the Spanish Army.
The major reason found in the analysis is traumatism, overcoating to upper limb, leaded
by hand pathology. Fractures represent the main motive for evacuation to national
territory as well as the most frequently cause diagnosed when injuries, exceeding the 30% of the consultations.
