Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of monocyclopentadienyltitanium(III) complexes with
the ligand 5-C5H5 have been carried out in this project. The reaction of [Ti(5-C5H5)Cl3]
(1) with excess LiBH4 in toluene produces the paramagnetic titanium(III) dimer [{Ti(5-
C5H5)(BH4)(μ-BH4)}2] (2). In the absence of solvents, this complex decomposes at room
temperature to afford the tetrametallic derivative [{Ti(ƞ5-C5H5)(BH4)}2{(-B2H6)Ti(ƞ5-
C5H5)}2] (3). However, the treatment of complex 2 with excess thf yields the mononuclear
titanium(III) derivative [Ti(ƞ5-C5H5)(BH4)2(thf)] (4), which is thermally stable. The reaction
of complex 2 with two equivalents of (LutH)(BPh4) or four equivalents of (LutH)(OTf)
leads to [Ti(ƞ5-C5H5)(BH4)(thf)2](BPh4) (5) or [{Ti(ƞ5-C5H5)(-O2SOCF3)2}6] (6) releasing
H2 and generating the acid-base adduct (Lut)BH3. All compounds were synthesized
under argon atmosphere using Schlenk line or glovebox techniques, and they were
characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, and a single crystal
X-ray diffraction determination for 3 and 6.
