Abstract
The main objective of this Final Degree Project is to analyse the design of furniture made by architects during the fifties and sixties of the 20th century in Madrid, as well as the presence of furniture in the interiors of architectural works.
Firstly, a theoretical framework is elaborated in which the design of modern furniture in Spain during these
two decades is presented, with the aim of understanding the transformation, concepts, characteristics, and
influences of the new types of furniture. The research leads to the identification of the national architects,
designers and manufacturers involved in the development and production of pioneering furniture projects, in parallel to modern architecture; in addition to the importance that the architecture and design magazines of the time had in the dissemination of this furniture among Spanish society.
In this way, it is proposed how furniture and decoration are considered an extension of architecture; the
importance of the link that can be established between both, considering the contribution of the furniture to
the interior space and vice versa.
On this basis, a selection of five typologies of architectural spaces is made: residential, university, religious, commercial and exhibition spaces. The classification is used to analyse a series of relevant works from the fifties and sixties associated with the city of Madrid, in which furniture and interior design are of particular interest and their authorship belongs to the architects of the modern architectural work where they are placed.
