Abstract
This chapter analyses the evolution of haematology: its historical background, development in Spain and its prospects. The speciality of haematology and haemotherapy integrates clinical haematology with the haematology laboratory, which includes cytology and blood biology, haemostasis and thrombosis, together with transfusion medicineor haemotherapy. It is therefore a mixed speciality, with clinical and laboratory content, which must always go hand in hand. This combination has led to its greatest development. The speciality is obtained exclusively from the Bachelor's Degree in Medicine, through access to the Official Resident Programme. The evolution and scope of the speciality in Spain is summarised on the basis of the national study of the White Book on Haematology and Haemotherapy. It describes the activity of Haematology Services in Spain, their relationship with the frontier specialities and warning of the need for a human resources replacement plan. The last section of the work summarises the importance of technological and scientific advances in changing the course of numerous conditions in haematology. Finally exposes the concern about the increased costs of these advances, and the necessary planning of human resources, challenges that must be faced by the Administration.
